8th Grade Boys Basketball Regionals

It is a win!  Our 8th grade boys won their first regional basketball game in the Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association State Series.  The boys will play the second game on Thursday, Feb. 1 at 5:30 at Mascoutah Middle School.  Go Warriors!

Hovercraft Challenge

 Our Science Club members get the opportunity to participate in some exciting engineering challenges as we promote STEM education at Whiteside Middle School.  For the latest challenge, the students were given 30 minutes to design a hovercraft out of a DVD, balloon, tape, glue, and pop up lid.  The students collaborated in teams of three students.  Once they designed, built, and tested their hovercraft, they had to create an Olympic sport for their hovercraft.  They demonstrated how the Olympic sport would look, described the objective, and determined the rules.  Some of the students' ideas were Olympic Bumper Hovercrafts, Olympic Hovercraft Ball, and Olympic Hovercraft Races.  Some of the students wanted to improve their design, so they took it home and made modifications.  They will be bringing it to the next meeting. and will bring it to the next meeting.  Thanks to Dr. Hamilton and Mrs. Phillips for their leadership and dedication to the Whiteside Middle School Science Club.

Chess Team

Our Chess Team is off to a fantastic start!  We beat West Junior High last week.  The next chess match will be on Jan. 29th against Shiloh Middle School at 4 pm at Belleville West High School. 

Hat Day for Make-A-Wish

Service Learning continues to be a big part of our curriculum at Whiteside Middle School.  Our Student Council educated our students about the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the life changing services it provides for children who are terminally ill.  We had a hat day last week and collected over $200.00 for Make-A-Wish.

Scholar Bowl Team

Our Scholar Bowl Team continues to impress both at home and away matches.  The team beat Belle Valley last week.  They will play next on Wednesday, January 31st at 4 pm at Shiloh Middle School.  Go Warriors!

Cheerleaders

Thank you to our spirited cheerleaders for their leadership, hard work, and dedication throughout the 2017-2018 basketball season.  Their enthusiasm united all of us at the basketball games.  You can still see this talented group of athletes as they cheer on our boys basketball team at Mascoutah Middle School on Jan. 30th at 5:30 pm.  This will be the start of regional play for boys basketball.

Update for the Great Kindness Challenge 2018

Whiteside Middle School is participating in The Great Kindness Challenge 2018!  Throughout the week teachers will be handing out kindness tickets when they witness random acts of kindness.  When students receive a ticket, they can turn it into the office for a chance to win some fabulous prizes.  The ticket drawing will be held at the end of the day on Friday, Jan. 26th.

The Great Kindness Challenge 2018

The last week of January is the National "Great Kindness Challenge."  This year Whiteside Middle School has signed up to participate.  We are looking forward to making this an annual campaign and encourage all students to participate in spreading kindness to others.  Join your fellow Whiteside students/teachers and show your commitment to kindness by participating in the spirit days!  The grade level with the highest percentage of participants for the week will earn a free hour of gym time.

     *Monday, January 22nd is "Oceans of Kindness."  Wear blue and "Choose Kind."

     *Tuesday, January 23rd is "It's Cool to be Kind."  Wear a cool pair of glasses or sunglasses.

     *Wednesday, January 24th is "Team Kindness."  Wear your favorite sports gear.

     *Thursday, January 25th is "Crazy for Kindness."  Wear crazy socks, colors, or hair.

     *Friday, January 26th is "Hip for Kindness."  Wear school appropriate hip hop or hippie gear.

Blood Drive: Video

Spelling Bee

On Friday, January 12th, Whiteside Middle School competed in the Conference Spelling Bee.  Out of 12 schools, we placed 2nd!  There we 48 contestants and one of our 7th graders, Elise, won second place overall!  We are very proud of our Whiteside Middle School Spelling Team!

Whiteside Willy

Happy Birthday to our own Whiteside Willy!  On January 10th, Willy turned nine years old.  We are so fortunate to have Willy with us here at Whiteside Middle School.  He brightens the days of so many students!  Dr. Hasenstab reports that every morning Willy is excited to come to school and the days he is off, he misses being with our wonderful students, faculty, and staff.  Happy birthday, Willy!

8th Grade Girls Basketball

Our 8th Grade Girls Basketball Team won the first game in the Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association Regional State Series.  They play their second game in the series tomorrow, Jan. 11th at 6 pm at Whiteside Middle School.  Come on our and cheer on your Warriors!

D.A.R.E. Graduation

Our 6th graders recently completed their D.A.R.E. Program  with the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department.  Here are the photos from the graduation ceremony.  We would like to thank the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department for their continued support of Whiteside Middle School.
